Signifying Nothing: Nihilism, Information, and Signs

Abstract This article explores the theme of nihilism from perspective post-continental philosophy by focusing on semiotics and information theory question “meaning” at stake between them. Nihilism is characterised here as an avatar counter-Enlightenment tradition. Post-continental defined a positive revaluation reason, science, technology, which were critiqued for their nihilistic effects key continental philosophers. Rather than critiquing nihilism, then, philosophers have tended to affirm it. argues that, despite appearances, such developments in fact allow deepened response considered existential problem. It does so using Lyotard’s critique show how kind linguistic cultural meaning associated with itself nihilism. then examines Meillassoux’s meaningless sign Laruelle’s idea secret truth Hermes argue that this new paradigm allows offering alternative semiotic meaning. Thus freed, embrace plural articulation meanings grounded data, enables superior age.
